SUMMARY:Neonatal and Early Kittenhood Emergencies
DESCRIPTION:The National Kitten Coalition is presenting a free RACE® CE  webinar! \nWe want to say thank you to our veterinary professional community!\nMark your calendars for a FREE Webinar approved by the AAVSB for 1.00 credit of live\, interactive RACE® CE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/nurses in jurisdictions that recognize RACE® approval. \nThis webinar is open to all veterinary professionals. Please share with any of your colleagues who might be interested in attending\, need CE credits\, or simply love kittens. \n\nDate/Time: Wednesday\, November 13\, 2024\, at 7:30 PM EST\nTitle: Neonatal and Early Kittenhood Emergencies: Be ready to save the next one that walks through your door\nSpeaker: Emily Coleman\, DVM\n\nWebinar Overview\nKittens are very fragile beings that require immediate and intensive care in the face of a medical emergency. Conditions that will leave an adult cat only mildly ill or uncomfortable can quickly become life-threatening for a neonatal or young kitten. Neonatology and early kittenhood are often overlooked topics during veterinary medical education and continuing education opportunities\, leaving both the recent graduate and the seasoned practitioner without the necessary knowledge of how to handle various emergencies commonly seen in kittens. \nThis talk will discuss how to recognize\, diagnose and make treatment recommendations for several types of emergencies including ocular\, respiratory\, gastrointestinal\, parasitic\, congenital and traumatic. These emergencies\, while varying in levels of urgency as well as ease of treatment\, all often involve a kitten that is just days to weeks old. \nAs the nation adopts a no-kill outlook to animal rescue\, it is only expected that more kittens will be seen in veterinary hospitals\, making it very important for veterinary practitioners to be empowered to have frank\, honest conversations with their clients on treatment recommendations and prognosis\, whether they be rescue organizations or good Samaritans of the general public. As early veterinary intervention is almost always required\, this tiny\, vulnerable population deserves a chance to survive by being evaluated and treated appropriately. \nSession objectives: After attending this virtual lecture an individual should be able to: \n\nIdentify the most common neonatal and early kittenhood emergencies seen in practice\nConfidently treat these neonatal and early kittenhood emergencies\nUnderstand the critical importance of complete supportive care for the neonate and kitten during an emergency\nCreate a kitten emergency kit for use in her hospital\n\nRegister today for this FREE webinar!

SUMMARY:Kitten 101: A Veterinarian's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The accessibility to individuals willing to foster kittens is crucial to their survival\, but fostering kittens\, especially neonatal kittens\, can seem daunting to community members or even seasoned fosters. This presentation will touch on many aspects of kitten care: recommended supplies\, the importance of quarantine\, determining kitten age and gender\, neonatal kitten care\, age-appropriate nutrition\, and preventative care\, as well as common medical ailments that may be encountered while fostering. \nGiven that the speaker has the dual perspectives of being a veterinarian and a neonatal kitten foster\, the hope is that whether the listener is a community member\, affiliated with a rescue organization\, manages a foster program\, or is a member of the shelter or veterinary communities\, this Kitten 101 lecture will provide useful insights and ultimately help save more kittens. \nPresenter: Emily Coleman\, DVM and owner of The Celtic Cat\, LLC \nClick here to register for this free webinar! \nAbout Emily Coleman\, DVM:\nDr. Emily A. Coleman grew up in Baltimore\, Maryland. She acquired a Bachelor of Science at the University of Mary Washington and received her DVM from Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. After over ten years in private practice and shelter medicine\, Dr. Coleman decided to think outside of the box and to start her own mobile feline spay/neuter/TNR and preventative care practice dedicated to supporting 501c3 nonprofit rescue organizations in Central Virginia. The Celtic Cat\, LLC opened in November 2021 and has since assisted over a dozen organizations with their veterinary care. Her veterinary interests include neonatal kitten care\, preventative surgery and medicine\, as well as geriatric care. \nDr. Coleman serves on the Board of Directors for Louisa Humane Society in Louisa\, Virginia\, as the IACUC veterinarian at the University of Mary Washington\, as a member of the Content Review Committee for The National Kitten Coalition\, and as of 2023\, serves on the Board of Directors for The National Kitten Coalition. She currently lives at Lake Anna\, Virginia with her husband\, their seven-month-old Catahoula mix\, eight cats\, six chickens\, and fosters over a dozen of the most vulnerable neonatal kittens from surrounding counties each year\, typically receiving them at just a few days old.

SUMMARY:Life and Limb: Leg and Paralysis Issues in Kittens
DESCRIPTION:In rescue\, almost by definition\, we see kittens that face health challenges\, including limb abnormalities. In the past\, others simply said we cannot or will not help\, but YOU can with a little knowledge\, help from your veterinarian\, and some elbow grease. \nLeg and paralysis issues are not uncommon in kittens; from the simple “twisted leg syndrome” to the more serious traumatic spinal issues. \nIn this free webinar\, Susan Spaulding\, also known as ‘Kitten Mom’ will discuss how you can work with your veterinarian to do as much as possible to help these kittens. She will describe protocols you can start early to help achieve the best outcomes\, and she will touch on some of the ways you can modify common items to fit your tiny kitten. She will also discuss tools like the Assisi Loop and laser therapy that can aid in the healing process. \nPresenter: Susan Spaulding \nClick here to register for this free webinar! \nReturn to Event Calendar →

SUMMARY:What Color is My Cat?
DESCRIPTION:A colorful\, fun presentation\, based on Cat Genetics “101”\, describing the fundamentals of identifying cat colors and patterns. \nThe presentation also discusses some of the most popular breeds of cats. With less than 5% of companion cats being an actual “breed” of cat\, the common model of describing dogs in terms of combinations of “breeds”\, doesn’t work in the world of cats. \nParticipants learn that “tabbies” are not a breed of cat but all cats are tabby cats! What’s the difference between a tortie and a calico\, why do some white kittens have a little black mark on the top of their heads\, what do all pointed cats have in common? Participants learn the answers and much more. \nSpeaker: Vickie Fisher\, President\, EveryCat Health Foundation \nClick here to register for this free webinar!
